Boiler Breakdown? Here's What To Do Before Calling a Plumber in Manchester

A boiler breakdown is stressful — especially on a freezing Manchester morning. Before you call an engineer, run through these quick checks. You might fix it yourself in minutes.

1. Check Your Thermostat

It sounds obvious, but a thermostat issue is one of the most common reasons a boiler appears broken. Make sure it's switched on, set above the current room temperature, and that the timer hasn't reset after a power cut.

2. Reset the Boiler

Most modern boilers display an error code and have a reset button. Hold it for 5–10 seconds and see if the boiler fires up. If it runs normally, monitor it for a few hours. If the same error returns — stop resetting and call a Gas Safe engineer.

3. Check the Pressure Gauge

Pressure should sit between 1.0 and 2.0 bar. If it's below 1, top it up using the filling loop beneath your boiler. Repeated pressure drops suggest a leak — that needs a professional look.

4. Check Power & Gas Supply

Is the boiler display on? Check your fuse box and, if you're on a prepaid meter, make sure there's credit. If other gas appliances aren't working either, contact your gas supplier directly.

5. Bleed Your Radiators

Cold at the top, warm at the bottom? That's trapped air — not necessarily a boiler fault. Bleed the radiators with a radiator key, then recheck your boiler pressure. If cold spots persist, you may need a power flush.
