Common Boiler Problems and How to Fix Them

From strange noises to no hot water, boiler problems always seem to strike at the worst time. Here's a quick guide to the most common issues, what causes them, and when to call a Gas Safe engineer.

1. No Heat or Hot Water

Check the pressure gauge first — it should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. Also check your thermostat settings and, in cold weather, whether the condensate pipe has frozen. If everything looks fine but there's still no heat, a faulty diverter valve or thermostat will need a professional look.

2. Strange Noises (Banging, Whistling, Gurgling)

Often caused by limescale build-up on the heat exchanger — common in hard water areas like Liverpool and Manchester — or trapped air in the system. Bleeding your radiators can fix gurgling. Persistent kettling or banging usually means a flush or engineer visit is needed.

3. Boiler Leaking Water

Switch the boiler off immediately and isolate the water supply. Leaks can stem from loose connections, a corroded heat exchanger, or a faulty pressure valve. Don't leave it — water damage compounds quickly. Call a Gas Safe engineer as soon as possible.

4. Boiler Keeps Switching Off

Low pressure, a malfunctioning pump, or clogged filters are the usual culprits. Try a reset and check the pressure. If it keeps cutting out, a professional diagnosis will identify whether it's the thermostat, pump, or a blockage causing the fault.

5. Error Codes on the Display

Check your boiler manual for the specific code — it'll point to the fault area. A simple reset resolves some errors. Anything involving a blocked flue, faulty sensors, or electrical issues needs an engineer rather than repeated resets.
