Is Your Boiler Ready for Winter? Pre-Season Checklist for Homeowners in Manchester

As winter approaches across Manchester and the North West, a few simple checks now can prevent a breakdown when you need your heating most. Here's what to do before the cold sets in.

1. Book Your Annual Service

A Gas Safe engineer will clean your system, catch problems early, and make sure everything is running safely and efficiently. It's the single most effective thing you can do — book it before the cold weather arrives, not during it.

2. Check Your Boiler Pressure

Your boiler should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. Low pressure means poor heating performance and higher bills. If it keeps dropping, there may be a leak or a faulty valve — both worth getting looked at before winter.

3. Bleed Your Radiators

Cold spots at the top of radiators mean trapped air. Bleeding them distributes heat evenly, reduces strain on the boiler, and costs nothing. Do this before the heating season starts.

4. Test Your Thermostat

Turn the heating on and make sure the thermostat responds correctly. If it's outdated or playing up, a smart thermostat upgrade gives you remote control, accurate scheduling, and real energy savings.

5. Insulate Exposed Pipes

Frozen pipes are a leading cause of boiler shutdowns in winter. Wrap condensate and exterior pipes with lagging — it's cheap, quick, and can save you an emergency callout on the coldest night of the year.

6. Watch for Warning Signs

Don't ignore these — banging or gurgling noises, water leaks, no hot water, repeatedly low pressure, or a yellow pilot light (should always be blue). Any of these means it's time to call an engineer before winter makes things worse.

Go2 Plumbing & Heating offer pre-winter boiler services, fast repairs, and full installations across Manchester, Liverpool, Wigan, Warrington, Preston, Southport, and Cheshire. Gas Safe registered, transparent pricing, no call-out surprises.
